French photographer, Charles Fréger.
His famous [WILDER MANN] photo collection
has a theme of clothes
and costumes that appear in
folk legend traditions across Europe.
When Fréger learned of Akita's Namahage,
he felt this was something closely
related to [WILDER MANN].
Inspired by this,
he created a new photo collection,
[YOKAI NO SHIMA], which collects
photos of traditional clothing
from festivals across 58 locations in Japan.
When he was taking photographs
at the Oga Peninsula, it seems
that the local people also assisted Fréger.
This time, we were able to use
the picture of Namahage featured
at the beginning of [YOKAI NO SHIMA]
for Akita Prefecture posters.
Fréger's Namahage seem mischievous,
somehow scary, and yet possessed
of a mysterious appeal.
