There are
150 Namahage masks?!

"Are any crybabies around?"
"Are there any naughty kids who won't listen to their parents?"
On New Year's Eve, young men from various communities
dress up as Namahage and visit homes across the land,
which is an important folk tradition for the region.
There are many masks depending on the place.
Masks carved from wood, masks made from bamboo,
and even masks made of papier-mâché.
Each area's people use varied means and varied materials
to create Namahage masks of varying expressions.
When these masks are not being used, they are displayed
at the Namahage Museum on the Oga Peninsula.
From the scary to the adorable, the masterpiece created
by the sight of these more than 150 masks lined up
together makes a powerful impact.
