In 1978, Namahage was designated as a national
important intangible folk cultural property, and in 2018
was recognized as a UNESCO intangible cultural
heritage.
There are many who know about Namahage despite not
knowing about Oga. This is an important folk-tradition
that is representative of not only Oga, but of Akita.
The Oga Peninsula where the Namahage live is about 40
minutes away from Akita City by car.
From Akita Airport, it takes about 1 hour.
With the sea on 3 sides, and Mt. Kampu in the middle.
Between both mountains and the sea, it is a very rich place.
Although it's a bit far, please come and get scolded by the Namahage.
